The authentic way to learn!

Motivated pupils and inspiring foreign-language teachers – preferably native speakers – who are passionate about their teaching! That is what we want for our children! The basic requirement, of course, is that I like children and enjoy teaching children and young people, whilst also being open to learning from my pupils in return. It never ceases to amaze me just how clever and knowledgeable my pupils are in foreign language lessons. Kay International School in Bonn stands out because, in its English lessons, it not only employs native English speakers but, above all, pays close attention to their pedagogical and didactic skills and their teaching personality.

Dealing with the humour of adolescents in a light-hearted way, whilst also commanding natural authority, helps to build a productive, trusting and close teacher-pupil relationship – a fundamental prerequisite for motivating, inspiring and goal-oriented teaching that inspires and enriches not only the pupils but also me, the teacher. I must take my pupils seriously, not only in English lessons, but throughout their various stages of learning and in accordance with their diverse needs. Above all, however, I must listen to them and give them space to flourish. After all, every pupil learns differently and has a different approach to language.

All too often, pupils in foreign language lessons have to guess what their teachers expect of them. Unfortunately, the pupils who are truly successful are often those who conform all too readily to their teachers’ varying demands and are able to adapt time and again. The true individualists often fall by the wayside, even though they are just as clever.

Foreign language teaching by native speakers – or at the very least, a perfect command of English, French or Spanish – combined with subject knowledge, an openness to other opinions and a good dose of composure and humour, enables pupils to experience the language and culture authentically. Language teachers should also make use of modern media; for example, in upper secondary school English lessons, they could watch political speeches or debates on YouTube and read current newspaper articles on Twitter. Naturally, pupils must learn to engage critically with the media. On the subject of The American Dream and the role of the USA in the 21st century Obama’s 2009 Inaugural Address is particularly well suited to speech analysis, and it is worth comparing it with the inaugural addresses of George W. Bush (2001) and Donald Trump (2017). The pupils should be allowed to discuss these topics freely and engage actively with current global political issues – and do so entirely in English!

In this way, our pupils also learn, almost as an aside, how to examine and analyse the various rhetorical devices and their effect on the listener, as required in the text analysis section of the NRW A-level examination. And when the pupils then put all this into writing together, they are perfectly prepared, both in terms of content and methodology, for the written or oral examination.

Wie profitieren Schüler/innen vom Fremdsprachen Unterricht mit Native Speakers?
